Vanguard Hops, a United States variety of hops discovered around 1982. Vanguard Hops is the product of cross breeding Hallertau with unknown pollen. Vanguard Hops have similar qualities to it's parents, noble and a light herbal citrus. Perfect for aroma additions to many styles of beer; Munich Helles, Kolsch, Hefeweizen, and hybrid styles.
Vanguard Hops are grown in the US so they are less expensive than it's parent Hallertau and make a great replacement for them. Though Vanguard Hops are higher in alpha acids less can be used to acquire your desired hallertau effect.
Typical Use : Aroma
Alpha Acid : 5.5%-6.5% AAU
Beta Acid 6 - 7%
Cohumulone 14 - 16% of alpha acids
Storageability 75 - 80% alpha acids remaining after 6 months storage at 20°C
Total Oil 0.9 - 1.2 mls/100 grams
Myrcene 20 - 25%
Humulene 45 - 50%
Carophyllene 12 - 14%
Characteristics : Mild, Light Aroma
Styles : German Lager, American Hybrids
Yield 1500 - 1650 kg./ha. or 1350 - 1475 lb./ac. Vanguard Hops' growth habit is columnar. Great spring growth. The shoots are upright and easy to train.
Vanguard Hops are disease/Pest resistance to hop downy mildew similar to that of the cultivars Nugget and Willamette.
